I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the Department of Psychology at Lancaster University, United Kingdom, and Director of the LISN Lab. My research asks how language, bodily action, and adaptive environments shape cognition and agency. Inner speech is central to this programme, connecting work on the neural mechanisms of self-directed language, voice hearing, abstract concepts, reading, and comparisons between biological and artificial intelligence.
My group combines behavioural experiments, EEG and fMRI, eye tracking, neurostimulation, computational modelling, and machine learning. Current projects examine uncertainty in inner speech, conditioned verbal hallucinations, real-time detection of spontaneous inner speech, and adaptive reading environments.
My work has been supported by the Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, The Royal Society, BIAL Foundation, The British Academy, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and Experimental Psychological Society.
